Aloha from Kauai, Hawaii

Acacia trees
Aloha from Kauai, Hawaii.  Last year, we went to the Big Island, Hawaii, but this year we are in Kauai.  Today, we explored the south part of the island.  We went snorkeling in Poipu Beach.  Kauai is very green and on the way to Poipu Beach we saw thick, tall, green vine type trees.  We also saw many tall flat top trees called Acacia trees.  We noticed many different shades of green in the forest, going from light yellow-green grass, green trees, and finally dark green trees.  There were many cows grazing on the green grass and also roosters, chickens, and baby chicks waddling and eating the grains from the grass.  It was my first time seeing real roosters, chickens, and baby chicks!

Cows grazing

Chickens Waddling

When we arrived on the beach it was raining warm rain.  We waited until the rain stopped, and then we headed out to the beach.  We put on our snorkels and fins and then went into the water.  The fish in the water were the prettiest that I have ever seen.  There were huge rainbow fish, striped fish, and other different color and types of fish.  Check out my last years Hawaiipost that has a page of a book with the types of fish we saw.  A Hawaii local gave us a tip that the fish love frozen peas.  My mom gave us a few to feed the fish while snorkeling.  The fish would swarm around us to and nibble the pea out of our fingers.  Poipu Snorkeling Beach was a lot of fun!

In the afternoon, after the snorkeling we went to Spouting Horn.  Spouting Horn is lava rock with holes inside it.  When an ocean wave hits the rock and water comes in the holes of the lava rock, the water inside the hole spouts out like a whale.  It was very interesting and wet!

Have you ever gone snorkeling?
What was the most interesting thing you saw?

  2. Dear Miriam,
It's looks you all have a great time.
I have never been snorkeling before, it's looks difficult to me, but that's the only way to see all the interesting underwater life. Do you know what kind of fish or other creatures you seen in the ocean?
    You made very nice pictures.
Miss you and can't wait to hug you all.

    1. @Grandma Tanya and Grandpa Eugene,

Hawaii is so much fun! I do know many of the fish I see and my favorite fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. It is the state fish of Hawaii. While snorkeling one day, we found an eel under a rock. It was so amazing!

      Sincerely,
      Miriam

  3. Aloha!

Miriam, you are such a wonderful writer! I loved all the strong verbs you used in your descriptions like spouts, waddling, and grazing.

You are also becoming quite a great photographer! The photos and the text reminded me of the trip to Hawaii I took last year. It was the first time that I had visited the island of Kauai, and I was amazed at the greenery. I believe Kauai is nicknamed the Garden Isle.

Here is a link to my snorkeling video. I love the music that accompanies the video. I wrote to Roy Sakuma, and he gave me permission to use his music in my video! Look for his name while you are in Hawaii. He is famous for teaching young kids how to play the ukelele!

    What is your favorite fish?

    Your envious teacher,

P.S. I met Mrs. Jacobs at the ISTE conference! She is delightful!

    1. @Mrs. Yollis,

Hawaii is so much fun! I hope you did wonderful at your ISTE conference. The nickname for Kauai really fits the island because it is very green and beautiful.

I am glad that you have met Mrs Jacobs. Was this the first time that you two have met? Maybe one year we will visit the island of Oahu and meet her as well.

Your video looks amazing. We don't have an underwater camera so we haven't taken any photos while snorkeling. My favorite fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. It has a crazy name and has a weird shape and color on the fish. We also saw an eel hidden under a rock.

      Sincerely,
      Miriam

  4. Aloha Miriam,
Thank you for your Kauai travel log. You're descriptions made me feel as if I were there with you. I also am impressed with your photography especially your capture of Spouting Horn.

I have great difficulty with water in my ears and nose so unfortunately snorkeling is not something I have done. I make do with the photos and videos of others.

How different do you think your life would be if you lived on Kauai instead of California?

    Mahalo nui loa,
    Mrs. Jacobs

P.S. I was so lucky to meet Mrs. Yollis at the ISTE conference! She is a very special lady!

    1. @Mrs. Jacobs,

Aloha! Thank you for leaving me a comment again. I think it would be a lot different to live in Kauai then California because I would definetly go to the beach more since the water is much warmer than in Southern California. Also, do many more activities in California then I would be doing in Kauai. It isn't as busy in Kauai. People take things a lot slower. I also play the piano in Califonia, and we have not seen a piano on the island. We have asked the locals, and they say that it is too heavy of an instrument to ship to the island. I might have to learn to play the ukulele.

I am glad that you had an opportunity to meet Mrs. Yollis. i am lucky to have had her as a teacher. Do you come to the mainland often?

Mahalo for leaving me a comment!:D

      Sincerely,
      Miriam
