New Piano Pieces

My sisters and I learned a couple of pieces over the summer and so my mother recorded us.  I played Prelude Op 38. by Dmitri Kabalevsky and Sonata No. 9  Hob. XVI/4 by Joseph Haydn.

Dmitri Kabalevsky, a Russian composer was born in St. Petersburg in 1904. In 1918, Kabalevsky moved with his family to Moscow, where he studied at the Scriabin Music School. At the age of 18, Kabalevsky began to compose for piano. His early pieces were practicies for his young students. He entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1925 to study piano.  His career as a composer ended in 1987 when he passed away.  Prelude is jumpy, fast, and loud.   Kabalevsky's preludes are a set of 24 piano pieces, and each piece is based on a folksong and is written in a different key. It was composed between 1943- 1944 and dedicated to Nikolai Myaskovsky, his teacher.

Joseph Haydn is an Austrian composer who composed in the Classical Period in the mid 1700s.  Haydn composed many wonderful Sonatas and Sonatinas. In a previous post, I played a piece by Haydn.  To get more information about Haydn and to listen to me playing more music by this composer visit this link. The piece that I am playing below is a happy, light, fast piece.  It is so fast that if my fingers get tired or get stuck on a note, then I mess up the whole entire song.  Hope you enjoy it!

Which piece did you like better?

  1. @ Miriam,

Wow! That was some recital! I always enjoy hearing you or your sisters play!

You asked which piece I liked better. I would have to say the Hayden one was my favorite. I liked the melody and your phrasing so much. I have never heard of Dmitri Kabalevsky, so thank you for introducing me!

Which did you like? Was one more fun to play?

    I miss you!

    Your pal,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

    1. @Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for taking the time and leaving me a quality comment. I can't really decide which one was better because they were equally fun to play. Prelude was much faster and more dramatic but at the same time the Sonata was light and happy.

      Sincerely,
      Miriam

  2. Dear Miriam,

While I have a number of pieces by Haydn in my music collection, including Haydn's Piano Sonata No. 9, I didn't appear to have any Kabalevsky so I visited iTunes to add the piece played to my collection.

I was very impressed with the quality of your playing. They both exercise your fingers and demonstrate your level of skill. I would say I'm more a fan of Haydn but this might simply be because I haven't heard enough Kabalevsky.

Keep up the playing, Miriam. Playing the piano is something I would have loved being able to learn while young rather than my stumbling attempts now.

    1. @Mr. Mannell,

I appreciate your comment so much! It is nice that you are trying to play the piano. It just takes patience and handwork. Maybe you will like some Kabalevsky pieces just as much as the Haydn pieces. His most popular piano piece is called Clowns. Almost every piano student who starts playing the piano, knows this piece.

      Sincerely,
      Miriam

I hope you continue to play it for a long time cause you're amazing! I was wondering how long you have been playing piano. Do you take lessons somewhere?

  5. Dear Miriam,

I really enjoyed how you played all your pieces. You have been working really hard on them, and now they sound beautiful.

My favorite piece was Haydn Sonata. It was really fast and sounded like birds flying in nature.

    I love you very much!

    1. Thank you for visiting and leaving me a comment. I only play the piano, but 2 of my younger sisters play the violin. It is definitely a lot smaller than the piano, but it is also a harder instrument to play. I know that you can rent an instrument and try it out to see if you like it. I hope you visit again and let me know which instrument you chose to play.

      Best,
      Miriam

  11. Dear Miriam,

My name is Catherine. I'm Tucker's mom from your 3rd grade class with Mrs. Yollis. My 2nd son, Bennett, is lucky enough to have Mrs. Yollis for 3rd grade as well. As I was investigating Mrs. Yollis blog, I came across you and your sister playing piano. I must say, you two are quite talented and listening to you play makes me feel calm and happy. You must practice a lot to be able to play so well. I was wondering how often you practice and when you started playing.
I hope all is well at your new school too!

    Sincerely,
    Catherine

    1. @ Catherine,
It is so nice to get a comment from you. I hope that Bennett enjoys having Mrs. Yollis as much as I did.

I started playing when I was 6 years old and I practice every day. During the week, I practice for 1-2 hours and on the weekends, I practice for longer. My sisters and I practice so much, that we have 2 pianos at home. Does Tucker or Bennett play an instrument?

I am glad you like how I play and I hope you will visit again.

      From,
      Miriam

    Love you.
