Visiting the LACMA museum

Over the summer,  I went to Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) museum for the first time.  The is an art museum in Los Angeles, California.  LACMA was established as a museum in 1961.  LACMA is huge and there are many buildings  although most of the time we spent in the fine art section.  We didn't have time to visit every building but maybe next time we can see some of the exhibits. In the fine art section I especially enjoyed three paintings that I describe below. In the same building we also went to see Egyption antiquities which had a very interesting mummy.

The first painting that I enjoyed was called Miss Charlotte Papendick as a Child and this painting was painted in 1788.  It was painted by John Hoppner who lived during 1758-1810 in England.  He painted it with Oil on Canvas.  I really liked this painting because she had a gorgeous dress and Charlotte looked like she came from a wealthy family.  I also liked the scenery that the artist painted as a background.

The next painting I really enjoyed was called Jean as a Huntsman and this painting was painted in 1910.  It was painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir who lived during 1841-1919 in France.  He painted it on with Oil on Canvas.  Renoir painted in the  impressionistic period. When you look at the painting up close, it looks blurry, but from far away it is beautiful Unlike Miss Charlotte Papendick who looks like she is from a wealthy family, painter during this time painted common things.  I really enjoyed this painting because it had an adorable beagle next to the boy.  I also liked the scenery that the artist painted. Jean looked like he was hiking to the mountains.

The last painting I enjoyed was called Two Girls Reading and this was also painted by Pierre- Aguste Renoir.  This painting was painted during 1890-1891.  I liked this painting because it reminds me of Sarah and I reading together.  We would read together in bed and sometimes we peek at each others book.

After the paintings we went on to look at the Egyptian antiquities   section.   I had never seen a mummy before but it was quite an experience.

After the museum we visited my great grandfather who is 95 years old.  We call him Old Grandpa  and he doesn't really mind this title.

What is your favorite type of paintings?

  1. @ Miriam,

What a terrific post about your visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art! It has been a while since I visited LACMA, and I don't remember the red and white roof. I guess it is time to go back!

I love how you selected three painting to talk about. Whenever I am in an art museum, I always think about which painting I would like to take home. :-)

It is not surprising to me that you picked two Renoir paintings. He is one of my favorite painters. In fact, I was just at the Getty Museum with Mrs. Chalfin and when I went to the location where they usually have a Renoir, it was gone. I think they rotate in different pieces, but I sure missed it!

I'm curious, how old was that mummy that you saw?

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for leaving me a wonderful comment. I remember seeing your Getty post on the garden on your 365 blog.

I usually go to the Getty Museum every summer, but for a change my mother took us to LACMA. My mom told me that when she was young, she went to LACMA and there was only one building. She loved going there. This was her first time back as an adult and together with us. My mom hardly recognized the museum because it has gotten so much bigger. We don't go to LACMA more often because it takes a long time to get there due to traffic.

The mummy was from 1000-900 BC, which makes it approximately 3000 years old!

      Sincerely,
      ♥Miriam♥

  2. Hi Miriam.
What a fantastic post. I loved how you reflected on each painting and wrote about how it meant something to you. I can identify with you loving the beagle in the painting as my 10 year old daughter would say the same thing! I also enjoy the painting of the two girls reading as it reminds me of when I was a little girl and how I would get lost in books all the time.
I think your post is wonderful as you have really given me a taste of the museum and I am on the other side of the world in Australia!
I teach a 3/4 class in Melbourne, Australia and I share the grade with another teacher. She is an art fanatic and does some amazing things with our class. She has introduced me to the art of Sonia de Laurney. She is a modern artist and uses lots of colour and shape in her work. Our class did some of their own paintings based on her style.
    Thanks for sharing your learning.

    1. Dear Mary,

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I am sure that the teacher you work with would love LACMA and some of the other fine art museums we have in Southern California.

I am a big animal lover and that is part of the reason I picked this painting to write about, It was also beautifully painted.

      Sincerely,
      ♥Miriam♥

    2. Thanks Miriam for replying! You are a wonderful writer and I am very impressed with your good quality comments. I will have to show my class as we are just at the beginning of our blogging journey.
I will tell my teaching partner Krystyna about the LACMA. I agree with you that she would love it. I wonder if there is a website for the gallery as some of our Australian galleries have fantastic websites - almost as good as being there!
Keep sharing your learning with the world!

  3. Dear Miriam,
I just loved reading how you went to the art museum. I have not been to an art museum before but I would love to.

The art museum is very big. My favourite painting was the picture of the two girls because it reminded me two sisters reading a book together.

What was your favourite painting out of them all?

I loved the photo of your cousins and your Grandpa.

    From your pal,

    BB.

    1. Dear BB,

I loved you comment and hope that one day you will also get the chance to visit an art museum. There were so many paintings in the museum that I liked that it was hard to choose just a few to write about.

How far is the museum from your home?

      Sincerely,
      ♥Miriam♥

  6. @ Miriam,
Thank you for writing back to me. I sure do hope I can visit an art museum. Art museums sound like a very quiet and relaxing place.

If you had to do a painting what would it be?

    Who is your favourite painter?

It is an hour to get to the art museum. The Art Museum is in Melbourne.

    From your pal,

    1. Dear BB,

Thank you for the lovely comment. I really can't say which painting would be my favorite, but my favorite painter is Renoir because I like paintings that are plain and ordinary but at the same time gorgeous.

      Sincerely,

  7. Hello Miriam,

My name is Elizabeth and I am a student at the University of South Alabama, which is in Mobile. I enjoyed reading your post about your trip to Los Angeles and your visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. I like how you picked three of your favorite paintings to share on your post. My favorite painting is the one called Two Girls Reading. I love how the girls are reading together, and I love their hats. This painting reminds me of when my cousin and I were younger and liked to read together.

I admit that I am a tad bit jealous that you got to see a mummy and other interesting Egyptian artifacts. If I am to ever visit Los Angeles, I will make sure I visit this museum. Again, I very much enjoyed reading your post and I look forward to reading more in the future.

Wonderful to see that you are posting again for the new school year on your class page. As always very impressive work that you are doing. We haven't had any students in our class that have visited the Los Angeles County Museum, but then our class of 11-13 year olds are on the other side of the world. I going to share your post with my class this morning we have a few students who really love their art and what I really like about your article is that its opening up the eyes of your readers to the different pieces of art that are on display, hopefully it would inspire and enthuse others to do the same, to write about something significant and think about art. We have a student in class who loves all things Egyptian, so she is going to be incredibly jealous when she hears about the Egyptian Arifacts, but I will get Elizabeth, whose the student to have a look at your page as well and leave a comment.
