Poetry

This year, my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Krauss, recommended some poem books to me.  I have read poetry as part of school last year  in Mrs. Yollis' class, but not on my own for fun.  Mrs. Krauss gave me a couple of books to take home to read from her class library and now I read poems all the time. There is one poem called Smart by Shel Silverstein which is so funny that no matter how many times I read it I still find it hilarious.   There is another author Jack Prelutsky that writes really funny poems.  One poem that I really enjoyed is called My Sister is a Sissy by Jack Prelutsky.  I love this poem because I have two younger sisters who do many funny things and sometimes get into big trouble. Therefore, I dedicated this poem to them. Even though they sometimes do annoying things, I still love them very much.

Below is a reading of this poem.

Have you ever heard of this poem?

What is your favorite poem or author?

  1. Dear Miriam,

    That was an excellent job!

I was excited to find your post because we are just now studying nonsense verse, and I happened to post about a Jack Prelutsky poem today, too!

Reading poetry can really help you stretch your imagination and develop your own usage of words. Plus it can be so fun! I hope you'll share other favorite poems in the future!

    Keep up the great work!

    1. Dear Mrs. Tatiana,

Thank you for leaving me a quality comment. That is so funny that so many people are publishing about poems. I love to read poems but I don't think I could write one especially one that rhymes.

  2. Dear Miriam,

You did an incredible job. You made me want to pick up a poetry book of my own! I love all Shel Silverstein poems. No matter how old I get, I still think they're hilarious!

I hope you're enjoying fourth grade! I love the fact that you're still keeping up with your blog even after Mrs. Yollis' class.

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Avery

    1. @Mr. Avery,

Thank you for leaving me a wonderful comment. I am enjoying forth grade. I stop by Mrs. Yollis class sometimes during lunch and she helps me keep up my blog. My younger sister Sarah is now in her class and also has a blog.

Is there another author that you really like and can recommend?

  3. Dear Miriam,

Bravo! I really enjoyed watching you recite this poem for I have not heard of Shel Silverstein poems. I do love poems myself.

When I was very young I used to write a lot of poems about my school friends.

I have got this great book called 100 Australian poems for children. Here is one of the poems in this particular book I hope you like it.

    Nightening
When you wake up at night
and it is dark and frightening,
    Just climb out of bed
    And turn on the lightening.

    1. Dear AA,

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I loved the poem you gave me. I will go to the library as soon as I can and see if I can get the book. Just like in the poem, I like to sleep with a night light so it is not so dark.

  4. Dear Miriam,

I love poetry as well. Although I enjoy reading it, I LOVE it when someone reads poetry to me! Thank you!

You did a fabulous job performing the poem. The gestures and voice inflections really helped!

What made you decide to choose this poem? Are you really afraid of your sister? :-)

    Mrs. Y♥llis

  5. Dear Miriam,

I totally enjoyed listening to the poem that you so beautifully recited. I liked the props and the intonation you used during your performance. You are very talented in so many ways.
Did you learn any other poems by heart?

  6. Dear Miriam,
I really enjoyed you reciting the poem My Sisters a Sissy.

Interesting question I have not heard of the poem you recited. It really is a funny poem.

Here is my poem for you Miriam from one of my poetry books.

    Mist crept while I slept
    seemed to swallow
    every hollow
    grey white over every tree
    grey cloak falling over me
    misty fingers reaching out
    misty fingers all about
    mist crept while I slept.

Can you guess what this poem is about Miriam?

    From your pal,
    BB.

  7. Dear BB,

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I loved the poem you sent me. The poet describes it so well that I can almost feel it. I think this poem is about the fog at night. Is that right?
