Happy New Year!

My aunt and me

New Years Eve is a big celebration at my grandmothers house every year.  In addition New Years, we also celebrate aunt's birthday.  She was born on December 31st.  A lot of family and friends come over to celebrate with us.  My great uncles and aunts, grandparents and great grandparents as well as many other friends, all come to my grandmother's house. It is really nice to see everyone.

Dinner

My grandmother makes a lot of delicious food like stuffed cabbage, pirogy, potatoes, and a big fat turkey. Everyone eats and talks and waits for the clock to strike midnight.  A couple of minutes before midnight, all of the family gathers around the television and watches as the famous ball drops down at Times Square in New York.  Then, everyone wishes each other a Happy New year!

My favorite part of the evening was when all of the children got presents. This year, I got an electric scrabble and a book, The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

How did you celebrate New Years?

  2. Dear Miriam,
Happy New Year to you and your family.

Like AA said we celebrate New Years day and Eve in Albury (New South Wales).

I went to bed at 11:00 as I didn't see in the New Year. However the next morning I did.

  3. Hi Miriam!

Thanks for putting my picture up! We look good together, don't we? What was your favorite thing to eat over New Years? Mine was pirogy and keilbasa. That electronic scrabble game was really fun. Is your score getting better?

    Love you!

    Your Auntie,

    Elana

  4. Dear Miriam,

What a terrific second post! I ♥ how you add appropriate pictures to your posts to complement your writing. (Complement is a fancy word that means...a thing that completes or brings to perfection. It is a different word than compliment...which means a polite expression of praise.)

You might find this hard to believe, but sometimes I fall asleep before midnight! I have often celebrated New Year's "New York" style. Do you know what I mean? This year I made it! Mr. Yollis and I went to a festive party, much like yours! We enjoyed wonderful food and conversation!

I have a question for you: What is pirogy?

    Your friend,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  5. Dear Miriam,

Great post! I always enjoy learning what people in dfferent parts of the world do to celebrate important events.

At 7am on the morning of New Year's Eve Mrs Morris and I did a fun run in Geelong. We have done this for the past four years! There were a few hundred people in the event this year. Later that night I went to Mrs Morris and Nate's house for dinner. It was very, very hot on New Year's Eve.

It is interesting that due to the different time zones, we all celebrate New Year's Eve at different times! Do you think we begin our new year before or after you do?

I would love to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York and go to Times Square to see the famous ball drop at midnight!

I find it interesting that you get presents on New Year's Eve. We don't really have that tradition here. Is it just your family that does that?

    Best wishes,
    Miss Jordan

  6. Dear Miriam,

I enjoyed reading about your family's New Year celebration. I am a teacher in Oklahoma. I teach a journalism/media class for 7th-12th grade students in a very small school in the southeastern part of our state. We just recently started a classroom blog. I am inspired by your desire to share your thoughts with others around the world. We are all learners.

The next time you gather with your family, I would like to encourage you to interview your great grandparents and your grandparents. What five interview questions would you choose to ask in an interview? You could post their responses on your blog and encourage others to record their grandparents' history through technology we have today (i.e. cell phone, voice recorder, computer, etc.).

    Happy New Year from Oklahoma!

  8. Dear Miriam,

I think it is great that you celebrate the New Year with your family. It sounds like you have some wonderful traditions! I have never heard of presents on New Years, but you got some excellent ones. I loved reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when I was in third grade.

I'm afraid I didn't do anything too exciting this New Years. Usually I get together with a bunch of friends and we have a big campfire at a little beach. Then we have our own "New Years Ball" that is covered with Christmas lights and we slide it down a flagpole right at midnight. But this year I had a little cold so I just stayed home and relaxed.

I am so impressed with your blog! I agree with Mrs. Yollis - I really like the way you add images to go along with the text.

    From,
    Mr. Salsich

P.S. It was fun Skyping with you the other day.

  9. Dear Miriam,

What a great post, I love all your pictures. Your family's New Year's party sounds like a lot of fun! The food sounds delicious also!

For New Year's Eve my family and I went to a friend's house to celebrate. Right before midnight everyone gathered around the television and watched the famous ball drop in New York City. I didn't go to bed until 12:30, I fell asleep immediately because I was exhausted.

Thank you for leaving me a comment. I was sent to bed with my brother and my sisters but we did not go to bed. We were listening to all the talking and and screaming.

Pierogi are dough that are stuffed with potato, sauerkraut, or meat. My grandmother makes my favorite, stuffed with meat.

The New Years run sounds like fun. How far did you run?

I would also really like to go to New York to see the ball drop at 12:00 and see the fire works. I love to watch fire works.

My mom sent me to bed early with my brothers and sisters but we did not go to bed we stayed up until midnight.

To answer your question, I think you celebrated New Year before us.

Getting presents on New Years is a Russian tradition.
