My Pillow

I just finished a new craft. I made a rug of a puppy using a latch hook kit. The printed image was color coded to correspond to a colored piece of yarn.

I used a latch hook to attach the yarn to the canvas.

When I placed the colored piece of yarn over the latch hook and pulled on the hook it created a knot around the canvas threads.

When I finished the rug,  I made a pillow.  I cut blue fabric into a square large enough to fit the back of the pillow.  Next, I took a needle and blue thread and started sewing the blue fabric to the canvas.  It is important to use small stitches when sewing or else the stuffing will come out.  After I sewed 3 of the sides, I started stuffing the pillow.  Then I sewed the 4th side but left a hole to add more pillow stuffing.  At then end, I sewed the hole so nothing could come out.

Here is an image of what it looked like as a pillow.  The pillow is now part of our living room couch.

Are you working on an interesting craft that you can share?

  1. Dear Miriam,

What a great post I used to do a lot of latch hook projects when I was your age. As a matter of fact I still have my original hook. :)

I love your puppy pillow which you made you did such an outstanding job.
    Well done Miriam!

Do you think you will make another one?

My craft project which I am doing at this given time is I am making mini rose buds out of clay. Once they are dry BB will paint them and we will hot glue them into a picture frame and hang it up as a picture of mini rose buds.

Hope you are enjoying your holidays Miriam?

    From your pal down under,
    AA.

  3. Dear Miriam,
You are so talented in every way. I love the pillow you made. The dog on the pillow looks like a distant cousin of Romeo.
    Keep up the great work!

  4. Dear Miriam,
I love your pillow. Great job!
Next time we can make with you a new project and you can learn how to knit and do other crafts. You have patience to do this kind of work.

  5. Dear Miriam,
    Awesome post.

    Your pillow looks excellent.

I have never done latch hook before it looks difficult is it?

Did you call your pillow Romeo?

I am doing Gartner stitch and it is not that hard.

Gartner sitich is so much fun.

I am doing it in Knitting classes.

    Dear Miriam,

What a fantastic summer post! I love how you used transitions like next, after, and then.

Old Buck would be proud! Remember him? :-)

Not only do you have great writing, but your digital images really help tell the story. Having a photo of the tools and materials took your post to the next level. Did you take the pictures?

You asked if I am working on a craft. Bianca got me thinking about knitting, and I might get an old project out. Otherwise, I've been trying to get caught up on the Yollis 365 Project. Got a little behind when I went to Hawaii, but I'm getting caught up!

Is this yarn project a new hobby? Is this the first pillow you've made?

  7. Well done, Miriam, on writing another great blog post and on completing your cushion! I really like the way you have used photos to help tell your story. It makes it a lot easier and more meaningful for us to read and more strongly shows what you are describing.

I remember really liking making latch hook crafts when I was younger. At the moment, I'm finding it hard to find time (or motivation!) to finish my crafts but I have been working on a teddy bear cross stitch for a while. Perhaps you've inspired me enough to go back and finish it!

  8. Aloha Miriam,
I had done latch hook projects while I was growing up and your post brought back a number of memories. I have also done basket weaving and cross stitch only because my friend forced me.
My current hobbie that I truly love is photography. I just have a regular point and shoot camera but some how my pictures turn out really well.
Hope you are enjoying you summer.
    A hui hou!

  9. Dear Miriam,

I enjoyed reading through your blog. One of my classes and I once made a hook rug. Like you, it was a picture of a dog.

When we started, many thought it would be finished quickly. They soon realised to do it well takes time. While some dropped out, others in the class were keen to finish. It hung in the classroom till the end of the year when a lucky draw for those who helped complete it, gave it a home.

Crafts are an amazing way to spend your holiday time. We hadn't thought to turn our rug into a pillow. That was a great idea.

    Hi Miriam,

You did a fabulous job making your pillow.

No I am not making something crafty right now, but I do make things out of card board, and I am making a scarf. I made a robot out of card board. 8O

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for leaving me a comment. Making rugs and pillows is now a hobby for me and I would like to make another one. This was my first pillow that I made and my Grandma said she will take me to the store to pick out another rug.

It took me a year to make my rug because I didn't have time to do it during the school year, so I only was able to stitch the rug during school breaks and summer vacations. I took the photos myself and I took them during the whole year.

  14. Dear Miriam,

I enjoyed reading your post. When I was younger I made a latch hook project. I think it was of a unicorn. I never made it into a pillow though! What a cool idea.

Right now the crafty project I am working on is decorating the bathroom in my house. I think I might paint navy and white stripes on the wall. What do you think?

    Sincerely,
    Paige M.

  15. Hi Miriam,

You are a very talented girl. It takes a lot of patience using that hook.

Congratulations. It looks wonderful on your couch.

    @AA,

Thank you for leaving me a comment. I hope my grandmother will take me to the store so I can pick out another latch hook project. It is so cool that you are making rosebuds out of clay. Last year I made a fish out of clay with my class.

    I am enjoying my holidays.

    @BB,

Thank you for leaving me a comment. A latch hook is not hard at all. You just repeat the same step over and over again. I have not named my pillow yet, but Romeo is a great name.
