Muzio Clementi's life and music

Muzio Clementi

The classical period in music was during 1750-1820.  The famous composers that played during this time are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Josef Haydn, and Muzio Clementi.  The classical period composers were the first to write for the piano and are best known for piano music.

Muzio Clementi was born on January 24, 1752 in Rome.  He was an Italian composer and pianist, and was the first to write specifically for piano.  He played in the church when he was nine years old and was invited to study piano when he was fourteen years old.  Some people even considered him to be the best pianist in his time.  Clementi also created a great relationship with Mozart.  He was asked to a duel with Mozart by the emperor and the emperor considered it a tie.  After that, Mozart took a melody from Clementi's piece and used it in his song, The Magic Flute.

Clementi is best known for his piano sonatas, sonatinas, and some etudes. A sonata is music made for instruments. A sonata usually has three or four movements.  Clementi composed more than one hundred piano sonatas.  His sonatas have hard and long passages.  Some of the easier sonatas were later called sonatinas.  A sonatina is a small sonata.  Clementi is an important person in the history of music.

I will now play the first movement of Sonatina 3 Op 36 No. 3 by Clementi.

Did you like the song?
Did you hear any hard and long passages?

  1. Dear Miriam,

Thank you for this beautiful magical musical post I truly loved hearing you playing the piano. I also enjoyed reading your history lesson about these wonderful composers.

You played with such grace and style that I could sit and listen to you play all day long. So from that you can gather that I loved your piece of music you played!
I did hear some very hard and long passages but only because I don't play the piano. I did notice the constration on your face which shows me this is a piece of music where you have to listen and make sure it is played in time.

Anyway I feel you did an outstanding job Miriam take a bow!

  3. Dear Miriam,

Wow! That was simply beautiful. You are a very talented musician, and an excellent blogger. I like how you gave some background information about the classical period in general and Muzio Clementi in particular. But of course, your wonderful playing was the real highlight!

I enjoy classical music very much when I am reading or doing school work. So far, I haven't gotten too into the classical period, but prefer baroque music, especially the late baroque period from about 1680 to 1740. I think The Brandenburg Concertos by Bach are just amazing.

Thanks for such a beautiful post!

  7. Dear Miriam,

You are a pro at the piano! I am amazed at how quickly you played! Your fingers flew off the keys and landed on the next ones. You went very fast, but you still played like an expert! You definitely have something to be proud of, Miriam. I think Muzio Clemeti is a great piano player, and if you keep up the good work, you can become as good as him.

What is your favorite piano song?

  13. Hi Miriam! I loved your piano playing! You are so good now! I can't believe it! Did you know that the expression on your face when you play piano is the exact same expression your mama makes when she plays the piano? It's so funny! I love you so much.
