Locks of Love

My friend Hannah, did a wonderful post on how her sister donated hair to Locks of Love. Locks of love is an organization that makes wigs for children that do not have hair. They ask for hair donations and accept hair that is 10 inches or longer.

After Hannah's post, all the girls in my family wanted to donate hair. We measured every girls hair in my family and the only person with long enough hair is my little sister Hannah.  Since my sister Hannah is only five, we had explain to her why she needed to cut her hair.  We tied her hair in a low ponytail and then my mom cut it right above the hair band.  Afterwards, my grandmother trimmed her hair to make it even.  My sister's hair is now very short and cute.

Thank you "big" Hannah for the great idea.

Do you think you might want to donate your hair?

Does anyone have any other ideas of things we can do to help our community?

  1. Dear Miriam,

I think it is great idea to donate hair to children in need. About a year ago, my sister donated her hair. After about a month, she got a thank you from the person who got the wig made from the hair. If I were a girl, I would definitely donate my hair for charity.

I have an idea of what we can do to help our community that I've done before. We can pick up trash at local parks. Last year, I picked up trash with my friend Dominic. We each picked up about 100 pieces of trash. That is a total of 200 pieces of trash! It was a big help for our community. Have you ever picked up trash?

    Sincerely,
    Jaden

  2. Dear Miriam,

What a lovely thing for you little sister to do. Hannah is a very generous little girl to have her hair cut short and then to donate it so someone so that they can have the gift of really hair. This is just priceless and beautiful. What makes it even more special your little sister is only five and what a beautiful thing to do at such a very young age.

    Well done Hannah.
I bet your family are so proud of you!

I know I am all the way from down under in Australia.

BB and I went to a fund raising event to raise money for people with cancer.
It really felt great to think your making a difference in other peoples lives. The joy of giving makes it so worth wild.

    Beautiful post Miriam.

  4. Dear Miriam,
Congratulations to you and Hannah. I teach in a town called Montmartre, SK. and a couple of girls did the same thing here. I applaud you all for your concern for others. Well done.

  5. Aloha Miriam,
What a wonderful thing for your little sister Hannah to do. I am sure the recipient will be so very happy. When you have a serious disease like cancer small things mean so much.
As far as how you can help your community, we collected books and toys for homeless shelters. Often we forget that children are homeless too.

It was a very kind action ♥ from your little sister and your family, and I'm sure the recipient of the hair will be so thrilled.
Do you have to grow your hair much longer to be able to donate, Miriam?

I think Hannah will enjoy having short hair with the summer time coming. :)

Each year our school raises money to help fund the rescue helicopter. Several of our students have needed it over the years, so we like to give our support.

  8. Dear Jaden,

Thank you for your wonderful comment! You did a very good deed to help the community by picking up trash. I have never picked trash in our community, but I do pick trash up from the school lunch area.

    Miriam

PS You are getting very good with making polls on your blog.

  9. Dear AA,

Wonderful comment! That is great that you raised money for people that have cancer. Every year there is a 5k/10k fundraiser near us to raise money for a cancer charity. My family and I run the 5k race to raise money. The last race I came in fifth place in my age category with a time of 23:30.7. I hope to run faster next year.

  10. I think that is very sweet that your sister donated her hair. Aspeccially since almost everyone you meet will know someone with cancer. I know two people and they are so thankful for anyone who volunteers or donates just to help them. Tell your sister great job!

  14. @Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for leaving me a fabulous comment!

I am thinking of cutting my hair when it is long enough. I first need to talk to my ballet teacher because the studio requires us to wear our hear in a bun. If I can't cut my hair, I will do a charity fun run in November.

  15. Dear Miriam,

What a wonderful gesture by your little sister of donating her hair to Locks of Love.
You have a great family that is always thinking about the needs of others.
Personally, I volunteered at Jewish Family Services helping elderly people live independently. It was a very satisfying experience.
You and your peers can visit a local senior center and help bring a little smile to the faces of the elderly.

  16. @BB,

Thank you for your comment. My sister really liked your comment. Since she is too young to read your comment, I read it to her. Hannah said thank you.

  17. @Mrs. McKenzie and B4,

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I recently measured my hair and it is 23cm. I am so close, I just need two more centimeters.

That is very nice that you raised money. Our class raised money too. We raised money with a couple other classes around the world, for the Ugandan Global Project.

  18. @Selena,

Thank you for your comment. I do know some people that have cancer and I hope that some day doctors will find a cure.

    Have you ever donated anything?

  19. Miriam,

Jaden's sister donated her hair a long time ago. Pantene has a program that I believe is called beautiful lengths and they do not require the hair to be as long as some of the other programs like locks for love. I think it may only be 8 inches.

I think donating hair is a beautiful thing to do.

    Great post!
    Fondly,
    Marcie (Jaden's mom)

  20. Well, when organizations have runs to raise money I do those. Recently we had a run called the Susan J. Komen Walk for the Cure. Unfortunately I couldn't make it but I plan on doing it next year!
    Thanks!

  21. Dear Miriam,

I really enjoy reading your blog, and this post excited me because I donated my hair to Locks of Love twice, once when I was four years old, and once when I was in second grade. I remember really enjoying the feeling of both having short hair, and especially the feeling of giving back to others. Most of the people who receive wigs and other hairpieces from Locks of Love have a disease called alopecia, when their body basically thinks that they are allergic to their hair, and it falls out. I felt very honored to help the community, and I hope you did too. Have you done anything else to help people in need?

    Sincerely,
    Taylor

  22. Dear Miriam,

We think it is wonderful how your sister wanted to do Locks for Love! We wish we could do Locks for Love, but sadly, neither of us have hair that is ten inches or longer.

We are students in Mrs. Yollis's class. Mallory has a blog and your mom, Victoria, has been leaving quality comments. Thank you, Mallory treasures the comments she got, so she's giving back for what she got.

Did your sister want to cut her colossal hair?
Did you want to do Locks for Love?
Have you ever done Locks for Love?

    Sincerely,
    Mallory and Savannah
