Kayaking to Captain Cook Monument

While we were in Hawaii, my family and I went kayaking to Captain Cook Monument.   This monument is dedicated to Captain James Cook and you can only access it by water.  Captain Cook Monument is located in Kealakekua Bay (Ke·a·la·ke·ku·a Bay).  This bay is a great snorkeling place because there are no waves. The coral and the fish are gorgeous. Because there are 6 of us, we had to take 2 kayakes.  My brother and I went with my mom and my two younger sisters went with my dad and on the way back we switched.

As we were kayaking back, we saw Spinner dolphins playing all around us.  They are called Spinner dolphins because they leap out of the water and spin in the air. These dolphins like to travel in large groups between 10 and 100 animals.  We saw probably about 20 or 30 dolphins swimming and jumping around us.  Some people even jumped out of their kayaks into the water to get a closer look.  We tried to take photos but they were too fast.

I am so jealous of your trip to Hawaii. If my wife and I ever get to go to Hawaii I will definitely try to go to the Captain Cook Monument. You make it sound like such a fun place to go.

Down here in Mobile we are very close to the Gulf of Mexico and on several occasions I have been able to see dolphins swimming in the gulf from the beach, but I have never been as close to them as you were. The type of dolphin we see down here is the Bottlenose Dolphin. If you follow this link you can find out more about them.

Thank you for the idea for a future vacation.

    Sincerely,
    Michael Armstrong

  2. Dear Miriam,

Wow! you sure have been on some wondeful adventures when you and your family visited Hawaii.

I have really enjoyed every post you have put up. This one is special as I really love the fact you went kayaking and how lucky were you all to see a group of dolphins. :)

BB's dad when you goes out in the ocean on his boat he often sees dolphins swimming along the side of his boat.
They do say if you see dolphins its a sign of something very special.

    HOw did you enjoy kayaking?
I did some kayaying when I used to live in the snowy mountains.

Once again thank you for your great post.

    From your blogging pal,
    AA.

  3. Dear Miriam,

    Awesome post!

Hope no one felt sea sick.

How lucky to be able to go kayaking and seeing dolphins at the same time.

I have seen dolphins when I went to Queensland at sea world.
While I was there the dolphins were so beautiful.
My family and I went to watch a special Dolphin show where they were doing amazing tricks with there trainers.

    Great post Miriam,

  4. Miriam,

Thank you for commenting on my Book Trailer. It took me several hours to finish it. I chose The Story About Ping because it was the only children's book that I could find. I don't have kids so I had to get one of my niece's books. I am sorry about the high pitched music. It was the only music I could find that matched the story.

    Keep up the good work,
    Michael Armstrong

I must say that I am so so jealous of your vacation to Hawaii and that you had the chance to be that close to dolphins. You are a very lucky young lady.

I would love to visit Captain Cook Monument one day and kayak. I have never been kayaking but you made it look so fun.

Down here in Mobile, Alabama we have Porpoises and they are really pretty. I haven't seen one but a few times here but they are pretty. maybe one day you can visit Mobile Bay.

Thanks for sharing your vacation with others. At least now I can use my imagination and believe that I am there.

    Sincerely,
    Lara Bishop

  8. Hey Miriam!
I'm a student in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. Your trip to Hawaii looks like so much fun! I have never been to Hawaii but I would love to go sometime. I love the beach and the tropical atmosphere and snorkeling. I have been snorkeling in Australia before at the Great Barrier Reef. I have also seen dolphins down here at the beaches at Florida. They are so beautiful. It was such an amazing experience to see dolphins swim alongside your boat. I'm sure you will never forget your Hawaii vacation with your family. Thanks for sharing about this great place!

  10. Dear Miriam,

You sure have had some great times in Hawaii. How was your trip? My brother and I want to go there sometime. What type of animals did you see? Did you see any Hawaiian monk seals? I did an endangered animal report on them.

  11. Dear Miriam,
You are so lucky that you went to Captain Cook Monument. It looks really fun! On our spring vacation I went to Georgia. We went to the beach and I saw dolphins! Where I went was nothing! You and your family kayaked down the lake. Did you get to swim in the water? What did it look like inside?

You are lucky you got to go kayaking. I never went kayaking so I wonder how it feels like. It would be cool to see dolphins jumping around you too.
