Hawaiian Volcanos

Hawaii has a lot of volcanoes and my family and I went to one of the most active volcano, Kīlauea (kiːlɑːuːˈeɪə).  A volcano is a place where smoke, gases, and black hot rocks from deep underground erupt onto the earths surface. The largest volcanoes of the five from the chain of Hawaii are Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai.  They have erupted in the past 200 years.  Kīlauea is still erupting and just erupted March 6, 2011 from the Pu`u `Ō `ō crater. To get current eruption information, you can go to http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/images.html . We visited the park museum and took photographs of a television screen showing the the recent eruption.

After visiting the museum we went on a 4 mile hike to the Kilauea Iki crater. To get to the crater, we walked through a rain forest.  Since we didn't know that it rains all the time at the volcano we got all soaking wet.   The rain forest led to the volcano crater.  A crater is a large hole that lava fills and makes a lava lake.  After some time, the lava flows out of the lake through the lava tubes and into the ocean.

Sulfur gas rising from a steam vent.  Sulfur gas is not good for you, so we didn't stay too long next to it.

Next, we went through a wet and spooky lava tube.  Lava tubes are ways through which lava travels underground from the volcano to the ocean.

Have you ever been to a volcano?

Do you like to explore new places?

Where have you been?

  2. Dear Miriam,

Wow how awesome you and your family got to see a active volcano.

I would like to know if you were scared? Because if I had to travel to see an active volcano I would a bit scared.

Walking through the rain forest would be great. Last year I went to the Otway fly and it is rain forest too and I loved it.

  4. Dear Miriam
What a great holiday your family had.

In New Zealand we have quite a number of extinct volcanoes and several active volcanoes. I think the last eruption from Mt Ruapehu, in the North Island, was in 2007. Thankfully it is a long way from where we live!

Do you have any active volcanoes in California or other states close by?

  8. @BB,

Nice comment! I wasn't scared because the crater we walked on was not erupting. If it was erupting I would have been really scared.

    Where is Otway fly?

Did you get all wet when you walked through Otway fly?

  9. Dear Miriam,

I found your blog post on your trip to Hawaii fascinating and your pictures wonderful. The pictures brought back memories of my trip to the Island of Hawaii about six years ago. We went just before Christmas. It was very cold that year. My wife was so cold that she wanted to move from the cabin we had in the town of Volcano to Hilo. The weather was better there. But we did tour many of the same places that you visited. We did not go through the rain forest, however. I wonder if it was an ice forest that winter.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my EDM310 Class Blog. I am teaching young men and women who want to be teachers. I want them to use blogs in their classrooms. Your blog is certainly an excellent model!

    Thank you very much.

  11. Dear Miriam,

I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. Congratulations on being one of the students who gets to have their own blog page! Your blog is really interesting and I loved getting to read some of your posts for my EDM310 assignment.

I thought you did a great job telling about your trip to Hawaii. Was this your first time visiting there? Your talk got me interested in finding out a little more about the volcanoes in Hawaii and a went to gohawaii.com to find out more. Did you know that Kīlauea has been continuously erupting since 1983?! Anyway, I liked how you included pictures and links to go along with your post. This really shows that you care about your work.

To answer your questions from the bottom of the post: I have never been to a volcano, but would love to go! I love to explore new places, but I do not get to explore as much as I would like. The only places that I have really been are New York (which was amazing) and Tennessee (which I love!). Thanks for letting me read and comment on your post! A summary of your post, along with my comments, will be available on my blog. Good luck in the rest of your schooling!

    Thanks again,
    Jenna
